Located at the crossing of the Nebraska City to Marysville and Brownville to Fort Kearney (Beatrice) trails, it was originally named Frances after the wife of General Richard M. Johnson. They were early settlers to the area. In 1857, the name was changed to Tecumseh to honor Chief Tecumseh of the Shawnee Tribe.
